Object Not Available

Public museums as we know them today are the result of a long history of collecting by individuals, groups and organizations. Palazzo dei Musei in Reggio Emilia is a space of discovery, a modern Wunderkammern where we find the world perfectly ordered inside display cases. Andrea Artemisio, fascinated by the objects and their nineteenth century setup, reconstructs by mean of the photographic medium a cross-section of the museum’s collections.

The grey background that characterizes his work recalls both the scientific process of those who originally collected the objects (Lazzaro Spallanzani, Gaetano Chierici, Antonio Vallisneri and Antonio Fontanesi) and the cards that are usually found in museums when the object is absent for restoration or loan.

The photographs presented in OBJECT NOT AVAILABLE hint to that long history of collecting that has allowed so many of us to learn about the rest of the world while remaining comfortably safe in a well-tempered museum gallery.
