The urban relationship between the public and private sectors is under intense scrutiny, driven by issues like the housing crisis, administrative stagnation, and a lack of strategic city planning. Milano Vendesi - Corso Buenos Aires examines these tensions through the evolution of a key Milan thoroughfare. From Porta Venezia to Piazzale Loreto, this avenue reflects Milan's dynamic, multifunctional, and diverse urban character. However, its development has often been fragmented and inconsistent, sometimes at odds with the common good. Our story begins in 1881 with the sale of the former Lazzareto land on the northeastern side of the street and concludes in 1965 with the construction of the building at the Buenos Aires-Loreto corner by Piero Portaluppi, marking the final major intervention in the area. However, critically unveiling this history is for us a tool to engage meaningfully with the present.
The exhibition features a curated selection of maps, texts, and images, complemented by short multimedia episodes, expert talks, and guided urban tours. The subtitle Milano Vendesi boldly references the 1970s publication Milano Vendesi: Vent'anni di Malgoverno Urbanistico della Città, embracing its critical stance we hope to trigger a dialogue, particularly with a young and critical audience, inspiring fresh perspectives on how to address the various challenges currently facing the city.
