KAALIPEELI, THE MEN BEHIND THE WHEEL is an exhibition that delves into the life of a Mumbai taxi driver, offering a deeper understanding of the individuals who play a vital role in keeping the city moving. “Kaalipeeli” which literally translates to black-yellow, are the iconic metered taxis in Mumbai which have long been the symbols of Mumbai.
Vasudev Sav, a cab driver, serves as a representative of Mumbai’s taximen. Through his story, the exhibition explores the sense of community, brotherhood, and the intricate yet seamless taxi culture that defines the city.
This exhibition is an extension of Lost In Transit; a visual storytelling project combining images, film and text to explore the cultural significance of the taxis in Mumbai with a focus on the design and graphics of their interiors.
